LG's DVS450H Makes itself a Stylish player

image It's becoming all about Blu-ray nowadays, but LG hasn't forgotten the DVD player: its DVS450H is doubly interesting for its design and DivX playing. Check out those sleek lines—pretty sci-fi, especially with that concealed display and sliding-door disc tray lid. LG call its shape "floating", and it can be desk or wall mounted. And its the first "DivX Certified(R) DVD player from a major manufacturer capable of playing HD video" according to LG, with playback capabilities from DVD or hard drives attached to its USB port. It's due in October for around $240. Press release below.

Delayed - Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1

It's a little difficult to delay a device that hasn't gotten a more specific release window than "the second half of 2008" (from official sources, at least), but Sony Ericsson is doing its darnedest. The image scuttlebutt at IFA is that the XPERIA X1 has been delayed to the end of the year, and a Sony rep confirmed to us that it's looking like December 2008 or January 2009. To blame is the software, specifically Windows Mobile 6.1 (or perhaps SE's implementation of it), which appeared to be actively destroying the display units Sony has on display at IFA -- of the three devices, one had some green status lights, one didn't work at all, and one turned on briefly, only to crash hard and never return again... a pretty poor showing for day one of the show. Some hands-on shots are below, glaringly void of actual device usage.

Panasonic's 150-inch Plasma!

imagePanasonic's 150-inch plasma from CES gets its very own room at the Panasonic booth, the new "budget-friendly" TH-103PZ800 103-inch plasma was relegated to a bit part in the back row of an artsy, rock garden-planted collection of displays. We don't have much to say about the actual display, and we're sure that anyone planning to drop $50k on one will be doing a bit more than taking our word for it anyways, but trust us when we tell you that the 150-incher makes the 103 look like a tiny pretend television for tiny pretend people.

Panasonic's DMB-BD35 & DMP-BD55 Blu-ray Players

A spec sheet is well and good (and trust us, these spec sheets are that), but when we're talking Blu-ray players it's really becoming a question of price: when will they drop? Well, if these Europe prices imagefor the DMB-BD35 and DMB-BD55 from Panasonic are any indication, Panasonic's answer is "not yet." The BD35 is being priced at 399 Euro, while the BD55 will go for 499 Euro. Our guess is the conversion rates ($588 and $735, respectively) won't apply here when these get shipped over to the States, but even at $399 and $499 these well-specced players aren't doing themselves any favors in a Blu-ray market dominated by the PS3. There's really nothing to say about actual "hands-on" impressions of these two, though we would like to say that we scoured Panny's booth for the DMR-BR360V Blu-ray / VHS combo and were sad to come away empty handed, our tattered copy of "Titanic" unwatched.

GM's Turbo Diesel Powered Captiva.

image

MELBOURNE, Australia — General Motors' Australian unit, GM Holden, says it is offering the most fuel-efficient midsize SUV in the new rear-wheel-drive version of the turbodiesel-powered Captiva.

Powered by the 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine from the Captiva all-wheel drive (AWD) lineup, the manual-transmission 2WD model will lead its segment with fuel efficiency of 32.6 mpg, while the automatic version returns a still impressive 27.7 mpg, says GM Holden.

The automaker's marketing director, Philip Brook, said the two new variants are meant to give SUV "flexibility and turbodiesel power plus the fuel efficiency of a much smaller vehicle" for customers who can live without all-wheel drive.

The new five-seat 2WD Captiva still offers traction control, active rollover protection, electronic stability control and four airbags, all as standard equipment.

The 2WD Captivas start at the equivalent of U.S. $29,265 for the five-speed manual transmission version and $30,988 for the five-speed automatic transmission, which is some $1,725 less than their AWD equivalents.

Europe: Lotus Clark Type 25 Elise SC

HETHEL, England — The special-edition Lotus Clark Type 25 Elise SC was initially limited to 25 cars for the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland, but now Lotus has decided to produce another 25 cars for the mainland European market.image

The vehicle honors Jim Clark, the legendary Scottish F1 driver and winner of the Indianapolis 500. Clark was killed on April 7, 1968, in a Formula 2 race at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany.
Lotus has decorated the exterior in British Racing Green with a yellow stripe down the center, and a removable hardtop comes standard on the vehicle. Lotus sport wheels in black and silver help finish of the look of this feisty Elise. The cabin is inspired by older Team Lotus Formula 1 cars, with black leather sport seats trimmed in red leather and a retro wooden shift knob.
The Elise SC is the most powerful production Elise ever, Lotus says. Its supercharged 1.8-liter engine helps the car sprint to 60 mph in less than 4.6 seconds and top out at 148 mph.
Pricing for the vehicle starts at the equivalent of $78,408 in Germany and gets as steep as $106,076 in Holland.

VW Voyage

image The sedan version of VW Gol is expected to be presented at the 2008 edition of Sao Paulo Motor Show, in October.

Besides the hatchback and the sedan, a small pick-up truck and an SUV are also expected to appear. The station wagon version of the car, called Parati, will most certainly be replaced by the current SpaceFox. This vehicle uses the same platform employed by the new Gol and the current Polo, known as PQ24.image
Although the tail lights are disguised with tape, it is easy to see they will be similar in lines with the ones used by the hatchback. The boot lid, which seems to be invaded by the tail lights, is only covered with tape to give that impression.

Pirelli's Chip Tires In 2010.

Pirelli has announced a further innovation in the ongoing quest to remove the driving from driving. Sensors have been stashed in tires already for the hasty implementation of TPMS, but Pirelli has taken it a step further, putting a sensor package on the Pirellitire carcass itself. One implementation of the "Cyber Tire" is the "Lean," which harnesses power from the vibrations of the vehicle and beams information including tire pressure, temperature, and load to the vehicle's computer.
Cyber Tire Lean is setting things rolling for the eventual trotting out of full-blown Cyber Tire, which will be built into the tire. The high tech rubber will be more sophisticated and capable of communicating directly with stability control and anti-lock brakes to improve the effectiveness of dynamic safety systems. Cyber Tire will also carry a three-axis accelerometer that will facilitate real-time calculations of friction coefficients, contact force, and load. Pirelli is most proud of the edge the Cyber Tire will give the nanny systems to catch and correct idiotic driving faster than ever before.

XS1 LCD From Sharp

image Thin is in at IFA 2008, and Sharp's LCD lineup leads off with the super-skinny XS1 Aquos series LCD. A 23mm thick 1080p 52- or 65-inch panel packing 10,000:1 contrast ratio, 100Hz motion processing and detachable speaker system, halves it's previous 5cm best from May of this year. Old school fat LCD fans can look forward to the D65E line, pulling 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and claiming an "environmentally conscious design" for Sharp's premium range, in sizes from 32- to 52-inch models, with prices to match from €899 to €2299. Of course, none of this would be right without a matching Blu-ray player, and Sharp has announced the BD-HP21H, a Bonus View Profile 1.1 model with a quick-start mode, but like the XS1 lacks pricing info that would make it so much juicier. All are due in the UK in October, we should hope for more details before then.

Exposure on 2010 Ford Mustang badge

The countdown to the 2010 Ford Mustang debut has begun, and it imagelooks like Ford can't wait to show us what the car looks like just as much as we can't wait to see it. Today it released an image of the new 2010 Mustang badge, hinting that its edgier design gives clues as to what the rest of the car will look like. Ford says its designers spent hours researching photographs of horses to give the new Mustang logo a more realistic feel, and we think it paid off. The new pony looks more defined and muscular, and it even got a cool new haircut! We've been anxiously waiting to see what direction Ford will take the retro design of the new Mustang, and if the logo is anything to go by then we shouldn't be worried. Let us know what you think about the new design with your comments and vote for which you like most in the poll below.

Its All About 1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst.

The Hurst Challenger will be available in four trim levels and include features like a supercharger system good for 500 horsepower, 5-spoke Hurst alloy wheels, and a "Pistol-Grip" Hurst shifter. Sony's SACD Player with HDMI Output

image   Great Caesar’s ghost! It’s Super Audio CD, a format that can provide higher fidelity digital audio reproduction than the Red Book audio CD. Introduced in 1999, it was developed by Sony and Philips Electronics and was supposed to combat DVD-Audio. However, neither really took off and now we’re in a completely different era of audio. SACD still warms the hearts of industry professionals and audiophiles, and to satisfy that niche market Sony has released the SCD-XA5400ES Super Audio CD player. The XA5400ES has a healthy number of outputs, including HDMI (with Multi and 2CH priority switch), digital optical +coax, and analog. Sony Japan has this at a suggested price of 176,400Y, while J&R in the USA has a pre-order price of $1,499. Expect the XA5400ES on October 30th in Japan, and similar dates worldwide.

According to Sony Japan’s press release, the DSD multi-level filter, D/A imageconverter system, and Super Audio D/A converter technology are the best Sony has produced to date. A twin R-core transformer and D/A system that is independent of the general processing chipset allow a truly clean signal output that should offer nearly zero distortion. Power consumption is rated at 25W and standby clocks in at a mere .5W. Dimensions are W430 × H124 × D390mm, and consumers will be surprised at the hefty 10.2kg (aka 22 pound) weight.

For SACD Playback -
Frequency range: 2Hz ~ 100kHz
Frequency response: 2Hz ~ 50kHz(-3dB)
Dynamic range: 110dB+
Harmonic Distortion: 0.0012%

For CD Playback -
Frequency response: 2Hz ~ 20kHz (± 0.5dB)
Dynamic range: 100dB+
Harmonic Distortion: 0.0017%

Garmin's Nuvifone

image

Oh, Nuvifone, how you disappoint us. Over here at IFA we just managed to get a Garmin rep to whip out his Nuvifone prototype for a quick look, but sadly, almost a year after the device was first announced, there really wasn't anything new to see. We still aren't allowed to take video of the interface, or really see much of the phone other than the home screen, and when the rep tried to show us how the Nuvifone kicks the iPhone's ass in navigation, the Nuvi promptly crashed -- so at least those two have that in common. Not that we should be surprised, Garmin mentioned last month that the phone had been delayed into 2009, but we're quickly running out of patience, as well as any scrap of remaining hope for this thing to actually matter when it does arrive. Peep the gallery for a little bit of iPhone 3G versus action.

LG 7000-series HDTV With Bluetooth At IFA 2008

LG Electronics is on the verge of launching a new range of LCD (liquid crystal display) and plasma TV sets in Europe that feature Bluetooth wireless networking, the company said Wednesday at the IFA electronics show in Berlin.image

The feature, which is common on many portable products but hasn't yet caught on in the TV industry, can be used to send audio digitally through the air to a imagecompatible pair of Bluetooth headphones so you avoid  headphone cables running across your living room. It also makes it possible to send still images from devices like cell phones to the TV, upon which the set displays the image on the screen.

Bluetooth will be installed in models in LG's PG7000-series plasma sets and LG7000-series LCD sets, which are due on sale across Europe before the end of September. The Bluetooth function will also be included in 7000-series models sold in other regions of the world.

LG demonstrated the feature at IFA with a 50-inch plasma TV that received and displayed a photo from a camera phone within moments of it being transmitted.

The TV set also has USB sockets into which consumers can connect devices such as USB hard-disk drives or memory cards. Once devices are inserted, the TV can display images as a slideshow and play MP3 audio tracks that are stored on the storage media.

Pricing for the TVs was not announced.

LG's NB41 Blu-ray NAS

image

image   Sure, it's just network attached storage, but somehow, someway, LG's dressed its NB41 Blu-ray burnin' NAS with just enough sex, just enough appeal to coax this helpless editor into risking security's ire just to grab a few pre-IFA snaps. It's bigger than we expected -- mini-tower PC big -- but we guess those four 1TB disks need plenty of ventilation. Just check that reflection in the mirror for a sense of scale.

The First DLNA Blu-ray Home Theater From JVC

JVC’s newest addition to its Sophisti line-up is the NX-BD3 Blu-ray home theater system, which is the company’s first Blu-ray system imageand the first dedicated Blu-ray player in the industry to feature Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) compatibility via a wireless adapter update. Thanks to DLNA support, the 2.1-channel system will be able to work with other types of DLNA-certified devices such as cellphones, PCs and others to share digital content, including MPEG videos, JPEG photos and MP3/WMA music.

The NX-BD3’s internal amplifier is rated at 4x55W, with the subwoofer delivering a further 200W of bass. The two speakers sport two drivers with different material thicknesses each, allowing them to create a virtual surround sound system with a phantom center channel and virtual rear speakers. Supported audio formats will include Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro-Logic II.

The Blu-ray player will be Profile 1.1 compliant, but will not be upgradeable profile 2.0. As it is, it will support 24fps video as well as xv.Color and Deep Color via its single HDMI 1.3a output. Other connections comprise an optical audio output, analog audio input, and HDMI-CEC input. DiVX files on CD, DVD or Blu-ray will be supported. An AM/FM tuner is also built-in.

Available in gloss black only, the unit will be priced at an equivalent of nearly $1,460 when it launches in the UK this September.

Creative X-Fi

image

imageCreative isn't showing off too much new stuff at IFA this week, but we should be hearing about the X-Fi Go! mobile sound card, which looks to be an update on the old Soundblaster Play!. The tiny USB 2.0 stick packs in quite of bit of audio-tweaking magic, with Crystallizer, CMSS-3D, EAX Advanced HD and OpenAL support, as well as 1GB of flash storage preloaded with Alchemy, WaveStudio, and other apps. Available now in Singapore for S$79 ($56), we'd guess it'll be similarly priced when it hits Stateside.

World's Thinnest LCD HDTV From Sony

image

Sony's taken the crown in the race for thinnest LCD HDTV. At just 9.9mm thick the KDL-40ZX1 nearly halves the depth of Hitachi's former champ (likely throwing up in the bathroom right now) and comes within a whisper of Pioneer's ultra thin concept. Featuring a LED backlighting, a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, 120Hz MotionFlow tech, x.v.Color and BRAVIA Engine 2 image processing this is about as close to a 40-inch window on your wall as is likely to arrive soon. Only one HDMI in is directly on the screen itself, all unnecessary HDMI / USB / component inputs are relegated to a base station, with the option for wired or -- possibly WHDI based? -- 5Ghz wireless (unfortunately limited to 1080i max resolution for now). We'd mention the XMB GUI, AcTVila video on-demand and DLNA support, but at some point it's just piling on. A mere 490,000 yen ($4,474 U.S.) puts the ZX1 on your wall, due at your local Japanese retailer November 10. See you there?

The First 240Hz LCD's From Sony - Nov 10

image

Sure Samsung had 240Hz (and wavier hair) first, but with its TVs stuck in development until 2011, Sony's back with another first / best of the night in the W1 series display, packing four times the speed of previous LCD HDTVs, and double that of the new 120Hz your best friend just picked up. Allegedly smoother than Billy Dee Williams cracking open a Colt 45 in Cloud City, the KDL-46W1 and KDL-40W1 bring 1080p with a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, BRAVIA Engine 2 image processing, 24p support and an assortment of hookups from modem to HDMI. Stop by your nearest Japanese electronics shop November 10 to get a peep at these and their slim, sexy sister, but bring ¥400,000 ($3,652 U.S.) for the 46-inch or ¥290,0000 ($2,648 U.S.) for the 40-inch -- you could try showing up without it, but why take chances?

Fiat Portofino

Fiat took one of its Fiorino vans, chopped off, well, most of it, and dubbed it the Portofino. Supposedly no more than a study for the Caravan Show that starts in Dusseldorf later this week, the golden, buggy-like conveyance is an homage to the 1960s. In a time before Fiat was building $200,000 supercars, coachbuilders were adding open-topped bodies to Fiat chassis like this for fun in the Italian sun.
To stress the beachgoing theme, the Portofino has wood laminate flooring and natural fibers treated with a special waterproofing for the interior surfaces. The car can (optimistically) seat five, and the rear seat folds down for your surfboards and anchors.
Instead of doors, the Portofino has nautical ropes -- which might sound risky, but the 12-foot car only has 75 horsepower, so you shouldn't be getting in too much trouble. Fiat has no plans to make the Portofino, but says it will create a covered version for protection from win and sun. Andiamo, then...

Manual Transmission & HGTC Handling Pack to be Offered for Ferrari California

The Paris Motor Show is barely 6 weeks away and arguably the most anticipated unveiling at the show will be the all-new Ferrari California. Sure, we have seen just about every detail of the new entry level model from the Prancing Horse, but that doesn't compare to seeing the model in the flesh and being able to analyse the beauty with your own eyes.

image

The mid-front engined sportscar becomes the first model in the Ferrari line-up to benefit from the new 7-speed dual clutch transmission system which does nothing but enhance the pure awesomeness of the model. However 10% of Ferrari's clientèle still demand a manual transmission, therefore the Italians will give in to this demand. No details on exactly what this manual transmission system will be however the six-speed version from 612 Scaglietti looks a good bet.

image

An additional option set to be offered will be a new HGTC handling package, similar to the one already offered in the 612 Scaglietti. It will include a set of lightweight wheels as well as a slightly revised suspension system that will hug the California to the ground just a little bit more.

Kahn's - Lotus Elise

BRADFORD, England — Although Project Kahn typically modifies just luxury cars and SUV's, the British tuner is going sporty as it teams with Lotus for its 60th anniversary to build a special version of the Elise.
imageimage

Kahn's exterior treatment includes new front and rear spoilers, wheel arches, side skirts and intakes. The interior also gets some attention with the addition of the Kahn logo on the headrests and full leather seats.

Performance-wise, this modified Elise gets an enhanced air flow system, Kahn sports exhaust, 19-inch wheels and a 28-stage dampener kit that significantly lowers the car's stance.

The U.K.'s Dream Machines Lotus is exclusively selling the vehicle for a price that will be unveiled at its official debut this September.

What this means to you: Project Kahn's tasteful and functional package is a perfect fit for the Elise. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent

Audi - R8 GT3 Racer

image

The courtship between Audi and GT3-class racing teams has officially begun with

the automaker's announcement that it has developed a GT3 version of the R8 sports car dubbed "R16" internally by its project overlords at Audi Sport . The rear-drive racer (GT3 regulations prohibit AWD) features a six-speed sequential gearbox, mostly production-spec suspension components, plus an updated front end and a large rear wing designed to keep it planted to the tarmac. No additional tech specs have been revealed at this time. Factory driver Frank Biela was at the wheel for the prototype's roll-out, and customer deliveries are expected to take place next fall. Look for the car to see wheel-to-wheel action against the likes of the Aston Martin DBRS9 and Jaguar XKR GT3 during the 2009 European racing season. We patiently await its inclusion in a future Gran Turismo update so that we can try it out, too.

Moscow Motor Show (2008)

The Moscow Auto Show is underway and Damon's on site with camera in hand. The car you see here is the Lada C-Cross Concept, which looks kinda like a Chinese knock-off of a last-gen Euro Ford Focus with added ground clearance. The C-Cross show car presumably gives a sneak peek at what a future AvtoVAZ car-based crossover might look like, and if we had to guess, a production version probably isn't too far off. We'll pass on it, though. Our hearts and minds forever belong to the Lada Niva, whose old-school looks are like visual comfort food. Plus, something tells us that this C-Cross thing wouldn't do nearly as well underwater.
